Facts About The Project:
The Union bridges over Interstate 55, the pedestrian bridge at Holly Hills and the pedestrian bridge near Delor Street were all built in the early 1960’s. The side-by-side bridges over Union Road have deteriorated beyond the point of simply repairing the bridges and the structures need to be completely replaced. The clearances of the Union bridges over Interstate 55 have also been points of concern and the bridges have suffered damage from trucks striking the bridge supports.
During the demolition of the Union bridges and the pedestrian bridge, Interstate 55 will be required to close. This closure is expected to be necessary for a Friday– Monday timeframe. Local traffic affected by the interstate closure will be required to use local roadways during the interstate weekend closure. After the removal of the Union bridge over Interstate 55, local traffic will be required to use Bayless Road or Reavis Barracks as a detour. The Union bridges will be
reconstructed and the roadway open to traffic again by late Fall 2010.
Fred Weber Construction Impacts on Union Road and Interstate 55 Drivers:
- Union Road between Spring and Hoffmeister will be closed in early 2010 through Late Fall 2010. The detour for the west side of Union Road (Spring Road side) will be the Bayless Road intersection. The detour for the east side of Union Road (Hoffmeister Road side) will be Reavis Barracks intersection.
- Northbound Interstate 55 on-ramp from Union will be closed during some phases on construction. During the Interstate 55 northbound on- ramp closure, traffic will access Interstate 55 at the Reavis Barracks Road interchange.
- Interstate 55 closures will be necessary for this project. The interstate closure, expected in early 2010, will be for the demolition of the Union Road bridge. The detour for this closure will be Interstate 44 to Interstate 270. The closure for the Union Road demolition will be from Reavis Barracks Road to Bayless. Iinterstate closures are scheduled to begin Friday after evening rush hour and be open to traffic by Monday prior to morning rush hour.

Commuter travel times
The Missouri Department of Transportation is advising motorists on Interstate 55 between Reavis Barracks and Bayless to consider flexing their morning and evening commute times.
MoDOT engineers have been monitoring the travel times since the left lane of northbound and southbound Interstate 55 closed for construction of the new Union Road bridge over Interstate 55.
Normal travel times for northbound Interstate 55 between Bayless and Interstate 44 is seven minutes. Between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., the same commute takes 12 minutes.
The typical commute takes eight minutes on southbound Interstate 55 between Broadway and Interstate 270. Between 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., the same commute takes 17 minutes.
"Motorists should flex their start and end travel times to avoid these delays," said MoDOT South County Area Engineer Kristy Yates. "By adjusting their time, traffic can flow more smoothly during the peak morning and evening rush hour."
